A bunch of random tangents I need to go on.

Dabangg is totally the 'it' movie right now. Well, I think the high is slowly dying down, but was reaaally well received by regular cine goers and critics alike and supposedly raked in more money than 3 idiots? Apparently Salman Khan returned to his old school hilarious comedic ways, Sonakshi Sinha is an absolute dollface and the music is nothing short of delicious. Supposedly it was the return of old school masala Hindi cinema. Hello, right up my alley!

While on his Dabangg high Sallu bhaisaab had his Being Human fashion show during HDIL Couture Week. He roped in EIGHT actresses to channel each decade. How badass is that, right? Right. Check out the star studded fabulousness here.

In completely unrelated news, the film Do Dooni Chaar is doing spectacularly. What? Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh on screen together after 30 years! (with the exception of her cameo in Love Aaj Kal). The critics are saying this is the year for starless casts. What with Udaan, Love Sex aur Dhoka, Peepli [Live](India's official entry for the Oscars) and now this film all doing well.

Woohooo we get a first look at Sanjay Leela Bhansali's awaited Guzaarish

Ethan Mascarenhas (Hrithik Roshan) is a magician who one day injures himself horribly while performing an illusion causing him to become a paraplegic. This is when Sophie D'Souza (Aishwarya Rai) enters his life as his nurse. The film focuses on what happens fourteen years after the two met.

Delicious. Absolutely delicious. A little disconcertingly dark, but I guess that's Sanjay's style now. I kind of miss his colorful (with dark undertones) days of Hum Dil De.. and Devdas, but that's okay this looks lovely. What really reeled me in was this song promo.

Seriously. Sanjay Leela Bhansali brings out the best in Aishwarya. And to quote a YouTube comment,

"Ash is a chameleon. Give her anything from traditional to modern she carries it off with such grace. She looks divine as well. Agreed she isn't the best most natural actress nor the best dancer but she is a competent one in both aspects and that adds the word 'versatility' to her cap."

Loved it. You have to hand it to her... the new chickadees have nothing on her and it's pretty baller that she's still around post-marriage.

And can we talk about that song?? Soooo sultry. I found that I liked it more and more each time I listened to it. It's interesting to hear SLB as a music director. We all know he has an ear for it, especially with that whole story of how he heard Shreya Ghoshal on TV and roped her in for Devdas (sadly he didn't use her for this film). Every single one of his films has had a memorable song, if not the entire soundtrack. I really anticipate the soundtrack for this one.

The film is slated to release November 19, 2010.

So Break Ke Baad just dropped their trailer.

Two words: COOKIE. CUTTER. A typical, cynical, "different" take on the "modern" love story. Backdrop: Some delicious city outside of India. A hit Indian movie doesn't take place in India... duh.

Please note my sarcasm. I'm so annoyed. Okay so it looks cute. Cute as in let's watch this on Friday night when we're deathly bored. When did India's audience suddenly become the tweens of America? Remember in the '90s even early 2000s when Bollywood could do masala film, but have substance? I miss that. Okay, so like a few years ago I would have hope seeing a trailer like this I really would (think Salaam Namaste), but it just seems so overdone now. Just in the past few months we already have I Hate Luv Storys and Anjaana Anjaani. Those movies aren't bad, but they're just so... bleh like the status rom coms have in Hollywood and it shouldn't be that way because Bollywood IS rom com.

Watch, this movie will be like the next DDLJ after my rant haha.

Do I waaaant to show you the trailer of Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey (KHJJS)?? After watching it... NO (but I will). Uprising against the British, folks talking about their playing field, Ashutosh Gowarikar directing. Oh hey, sounds like Lagaan. Too soon Ashutosh, too soon. It looks like all those other patriotic movies with a lot of Jai Hind, eff the Brits, bloodshed hoo ha. Okay so don't get me wrong there are good patriotic movies out there-- few, but they exist. I didn't really feel any sort of heart or soul in it. Maybe I'm just being a meanie because I wrote off the trailer 15 seconds in because of Abhishek's hilarious intro line. No seriously, I laughed out loud. Deepika might have a badass role though... enh I'm confused. Watch:

Remember when I was all "ohh Action Replayy might be cool, but not really, but maybe since it's a period film." Confession: After watching the trailer I'm aaaallll over it. I love me a good period piece irrespective of whether it's a satirical one or a serious/accurate one... this film being the former, obvs. Secondly it's totally spoofing old school '70s Bollywood (and who doesn't love '70s Bwood?). Sure it's a bit Om Shanti Om-esque, but I don't mind the overlapping. And like I said in my previous post, I'm kind of excited about seeing Aishwarya. Check it:

p.s. I like that Vipul Shah casts Neha Dhupia (Singh is King) she deserves a spotlight.

Action Replayy is an upcoming film directed by Vipul Shah and stars Akshay Kumar, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Neha Dhupia and Randhir Kapoor (what? Yes, Randhir Kapoor). Apparently based off a Gujarati play, the film centers around time-traveling. Mmm... the only thing reeling me is that it stars Aishwarya and it kind of falls under the "period film" category. Shah, who has a serious Akshay fixation, brought us films like Aankhen, Waqt, Namastey London, and London Dreams. The only film out of those I really loved was Aankhen... maybe this film could end his bad streak. When I say 'bad streak' I mean bad streak with me because I believe Waqt and Namastey London were successful though I can't really imagine why.

Promos for Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor's upcoming film, Anjaana Anjaani, have dropped. I hate hate myself for saying this, but I'm... disappointed. I wasn't thinking it was going to be a jovial-youthful film. The whole trailer centers around two strangers falling in love. Okay? Give me more than just that! Disappointed with what I've heard of the music too. Vishal-Shekhar must be experiencing the composer's version of writer's block? I'm not noticing a difference from I Hate Luv Storys. BUT! on the upside, and let the bias kick in, Priyanka's comedic timing helps make the movie look a little bit hilarious and I'll admit I chuckled a couple of times in this trailer.

Musical Madness: On Repeat

I'm back by popular demand! (I have always wanted to say that and it's actually true!)

I'm going to try out a new post titled "On Repeat" a.k.a what's on repeat on my iPod these days (Indian music-wise of course). *This post is dedicated to my music-soul-mate-of-a-cousin* (You know who you are). The list as follows, in no particular order, and why:

1) Song: Mehngai Dayain. Film: Peepli [Live]. Singer/Directors: Raghubir Yadav, Bhadwai Village Mandali and Brij Mandal & Bhawai. Why I love it: It's as authentic of a folk track you'll find in a Hindi film. It's raw and real, not to mention actor Raghubir Yadav sings himself. Also, the group jammed out to it on Indian Idol last week and Aamir Khan played the drums and it made me go "hai." Watch for yourself

2) Song: Munni Badnam Hui. Film: Dabangg. Singers/Director: Mamta Sharma, Aishwarya & Sajid-Wajid Why I love it: Well first off, look at that title, how do you not giggle with delight? (Er, the closest translation I can come up with is "Baby girl was defamed.") I assure you the lyrics get even funnier. Secondly, it's just a fun song full of zest and energy. No annoying English rapping portions, just a very celebratory song. Also, after watching the promo I fell even more in love (which rarely happens) cause it's picturized on India's hottest MILF, Malaika Arora Khan and dare I say it, Salman Khan reminds me of old Sallu in it. A few things to note: A) Is the whole Bhabi-Devar (sister-in-law/bro-in-law) dynamic awkward? B) Doesn't it look like Sonu Sood has Tourette's @1:00 min. mark? C) Malaika is so hot! If I look and can dance even 50% like that after two kids in my thirties I will be beyond joyous.

3) Song: Pee Loon. Film: Once Upon a Time in Mumbai. Singers/Directors: Mohit Chauhan and Pritam. Why I love it: Pritam and Mohit work really well in tandem and didn't fail to deliver this time either. It's sooooo romantic. Mohit voice is so suave and the music accompanies the feel perfectly. It's got a very My Name is Khan feel to it, which I loved and I enjoy the picturization of this too. Well, minus Emraan Hashmi. My mom always says he gets the best songs and it's so (annoyingly) true! But how cute is Bani?! I mean... Prachi Desai. Also love the homage to Bobby, but not so much the naked Emraan. GAG. Check it:

4) Song: Lehrein. Film: Aisha Singer(s)/Director: Anusha Mani, Neuman Pinto, Nikhil D'Souza and Amit Trivedi. Why I love it: A peaceful, contemporary number that you listen to in seclusion late at night.

5) Song: Aankhon Mein Neendein. Film: We Are Family. Singer(s)/Director(s): Shreya Ghoshal, Rahat Fateh Ali and Shankar Ehsaan Loy Why I love it: Because Shreya Ghoshal sings it. Because Rahat Fateh Ali sings it. Because there's a sargam. Because Shreya and Rahat sing a sargam. Yep.

6) Song: Tere Mast Mast Do Nain. Film: Dabangg. Singer(s)/Director(s): Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shreya Ghoshal and Sajid-Wajid. Why I love it: Omggg I can't explain how awesome this song is. Totally a romantic number, love the beat, not an ounce of Western influence. Rahat touches your soul and it's just composed beautifully.

7) Song: Gal Meethi Meethi Bol (The Bombay Bounce Dhol Mix. Film: Aisha. Singer(s)/Director(s): Tochi Raina, Amit Trivedi Why I love it: Okay, first off I usually hate when the films remix the song itself it's usually just a lot of unnecessary bass and kill the beauty of the song, but this remix does otherwise. It actually enhances. A fun wedding-esque song and the use of the dhol is perfect and consistent throughout without drowning out the original song.

8) Song: Humka Peeni Hai. Film: Dabangg Singer(s)/Director(s): Wajid, Shabab Sabri, Master Salim and Sajid-Wajid Why I love it: It's full of masti for lack of better word. It's soo fun! You can't find yourself not tapping your foot to it. The dholak beats are perfect and the harmonium just adds to the festive mood. Master Salim's voice is used awesomely in this. I particularly love the interlude that kicks in at 2:52-3:19.

9) Song: Behke Behke. Film: Aisha Singer(s)/Director(s): Anushka Manchanda, Raman Mahadevan, Samrat Kaushal and Amit Trivedi. Why I love it: It has the Spanish flavor which I usually find annoying in Hindi songs, but Amit Trivedi sprinkles his magic and adds an awesome beat. Anushka Manchanda does full justice to the sultriness of the song. A full on Amit Trivedi-esque song. I'm even willing to forget the line "...everyone knows you's a cutie..." oh God. I heard this is picturized awesomely too.

10) The rest of the Dabangg Soundtrack. The entire thing is so good! Full on Bollywood fun while keeping modern Bollywood music in mind. Sajid-Wajid are quickly becoming my favorite music director duo. They gave us the song "Jalwa", the Partner Soundtrack, the Veer soundtrack and now the Dabangg soundtrack. By the way, I can't believe their names rhyme. It's like when aunties are speaking and they randomly rhyme a word i.e: "table shable", "door shoor," etc.

I'm so glad this movie hasn't been TOOO hyped up, so the trailer provides some what of a surprise element. I hope they dont' go overboard with the PR work like they do for every other movie. It's such an overkill and then there's no excitement left in actually watching the movie. Like 3 idiots, for example, they ran about two promos, both of which were very short and didn't reveal too much about the movie and look how successful that film was. Just a rant I've been wanting to go on... back to the film: We Are Family. Ugh, lame title... good stills and promo though, Look! (Oh and if you're wondering what the hell We Are Family is... jog your memory here)

How chilling is Kareena's expression? Chilling.

Typical Dharma Productions. Can they PLEASE deviate from this NRI obsession they have going on. It's fun and all, but so sick of it. Do something Indian damn it. Whatever, the film looks fun and I think the casting is pretty brilliant. Well with the female leads anyway and I dont' think Rampal will disappoint. We'll just have to wait until Sept. 10 to reach a verdict.

Next in queue (queue?) is Lafangey Parindey. A Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepika Padukone starrer, directed by Pradeep Sarkar (of Parineeta and Laga Chunari Mein Daag fame). The trailer pretty much explains the plot so have a looksie:

I mean... it's like, you want to laugh but you can't deny that you're curious, you know? Well, that's how I feel anyway. A blind roller skater named Pinky... have we trangressed back to the early '90s where something like that would be acceptable? Oh well, I like the director, like Deepika, and Neil's a promising kind of guy so I won't write it off.

Lastly, there's Aamir Khan's latest production venture: Peepli [live]. Yup. It's directed by newcomer Anusha Rizvi and stars a handful of really talented stage artists. According to our good ol' friend Wiki,

"It's a satire on the farmers' suicides and subsequent media and political response"

Seems kind of similar to Well Done Abba, which was also a satirical take on real-life situations that occurred in rural India. Just saying. If this film's successful, I feel like it will only be with a select crowd. Watch and judge for yourself.

It's here!! The first look of AISHA has finally dropped. I have been waiting and waiting to see what direction they were going to take the film and ohmahgah, in spite of my sky high expectations, I'm not in the least disappointed! (Btw, if you're wondering who/what/where/when Aisha is... remind yourself here.)

HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE THE FIRST PICTURE? It's sooo fitting for the character. The second looks like a magazine spread-- very chic/elegant which, again, is fitting. Abhay Deol looks so very dapper in the last picture.

There's only a few in Bollywood who can carry off the fashion required for this film, but Sonam obviously fits the bill so I loved that she's casted in this. I don't think I have ever anticipated a Hindi film for its clothes, but I deffo am for Aisha. Let's hope they get it right, which according to these stills they are. As anxious as I am to catch whatever glimpse I can, I hope they keep the promos minimal so that the movie remains an enigma until its release.

The other day I finally got around to listening to Rajneeti songs. I totally wasn't anticipating the soundtrack or anything because based off the promos I thought, "enh... will it even have a soundtrack?" I, unfaithfully (to Bollywood), didn't bother to check the music director(s) or anything. Lucky for me, I caught a song promo on B4U and I'm glad I did. The music is surprisingly good so you should definitely check it out. But that's not why I'm posting. It's something I saw in the video that caused this post. Barkha Bisht has/had an item number in the film! Barkha = a television actress, a fabulous dancer and a killer body. I call her "The Shilpa Shetty of Tellywood" in my head.

Is it becoming a trend to feature television actresses/models in item songs? Remember Gauhar Khan's featured in Once Upon a Time in Mumbai? I don't mind at all. If you haven't figured out by now, I'm on a crusade to bring back quality female dancing in Bollywood (a pent up rant I've been saving to post) and I've always said TV actresses are better than film actresses. Shama Sikandar also has a dance number in the upcoming comedy, Kushti.

The only complaint I have about all of this is the song doesn't match the OVERDONE club scene. It does, but it doesn't. There was so much potential to run with this and do a ghagra-wearing tumka dance, but of course... we must feature a club scene. It probably doesn't even work into the story line, but we still should do it because that's what India loves. Ugh, SO OVER IT! Okay, in their defense, I'm sure a ghagra-wearing tumka dance didn't work into the story either... but still! Anyhow, I hear this entire song was cut from the film. Someone clarify?

Shama Sikander's item number for Kushti:

They got everything right except for that horrifically annoying voice. I know it's supposed to be a rustic-folk feel, but they failed and it kills the entire song. What a shame. Isn't it sooooo refreshing to see a dancer who can complete her moves?! Ah. I'm glad she's sticking to item numbers though and not dipping into the acting pool anymore 'cause that was a train wreck.

I've been a fan of Shama and Barkha's dancing, an extreme fan of Gauhar's dancing but I'm an absolute die-hard fan when it comes to Mouni Roy's moves. Glad 3/4 have been featured. Now someone give Mouni a beautiful mujra number for us to marvel over!

Awards Season: Cannes

Okay, so it's not awards season nor is the Cannes really an award function (but it kind of is) but I didn't know where else to place this post.

I Hate Luv Storys:

Ohhh how typical. How Bollywood. How Dharma Productions. Am I complaining? Nope! Oh wait, I do have one thing to complain about...THE SPELLING OF THE TITLE. The creators of these films are educated people, they know it's incorrect so is it all the superstitious stuff? I don't know, but I hate it... more than Imran Khan's character hates 'luv storys.' Oh gag me. Dumb down the youth a little more, why don't you. Sigh. On a brighter note, I think it is totally refreshing seeing Sonam and Imran in these roles... especially Sonam. So far we've only seen her in marvelous desi attire on screen or in marvelous high fashion off screen so seeing her in casual clothes is a welcome change. I look forward to this film (as I do to pretty much every movie it seems) 'cause who doesn't love a good ol' Bollywood flick? Not to mention I have a sneaky suspicion they're going to spoof a lot of K Jo's flicks so that will be fun to see.

While we're here talking about the magnificent man who brought A. R. Rahman to the Hindi Film Industry which in turn into our livesv(Mani Ratnam), can I just go ahead and tell you about this movie of his I stumbled across the other day? It was an old '80s Tamil film (dubbed in Hindi) titled "Anjali." It's about how a family/community deals with having a mentally handicapped four year old girl in their lives. Holy cow, it was such a real film which made it a feel good film as well. The kids in it were unbelievably talented actors so I wasn't surprised to find that they had won National Awards for Best Child Artiste. The movie also won for best regional film. It's not shocking to see he dealt with a film like this so beautifully because 'real issues', per se, are his forte-- which makes me curious to see how he'll play out Raavan since it's based on mythology. Anyway, this is my two-decades-later PR for the movie so if you ever happen to see it on (I caught it on Z Cine) or are looking for a good watch... watch it.

Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Theatrical Trailer:

Okay, not the biggest Ajay fan (slay me). I kind of really despise Emraan-- though I am guilty of enjoying some of his films. Feel indifferent towards Kangana (she's talented, I know but so type-casted) and Prachi is adorable, hasn't disappointed, but still needs to prove herself. Basically what I'm saying is that this film has a lot of things going against it, for me personally, but then I watched this trailer... and I'm totally feelin' it? I love the '70s feel, the '70s drama, the '70s gang wars. It all seems very 'blow' esque. I think I could like this and if anything I'll watch 'cause the gorgeous Gauhar Khan has an item number, holla! This excites me not only cause I'm a fan of her's but because that means there will be some very legit. dancing... assuming Saroj Khan's laadla son, Raju Khan does justice to her (Gauhar's) talent. Brown Bond Girl?

Rumor has it Freida Pinto is supposed to be the next Bond girl. Here's the catch, I've only heard about this through Desi sources and I have no idea if it's confirmed or what.

The film's supposed to take place in Afghanistan so a brown girl only makes sense. I love Freida, I do, but aren't Bond girls supposed to be voluptuous? She's petite... gorgeous, but petite. Now if I were to have it MY way (and wouldn't we all love that?) I think Shilpa Shetty would be PERFECT. Wasn't she being considered at one point and time or did I make that up? I think I made that up, because when Aishwarya was being considered I think I went on the same rant about how it should be Lady Shetty.

Okay so she's making a weird face. We all know she's attractive... but look at that body!!

On a kind of side-tangent: I heard this bit of news from my side of the world. Apparently Lady Gaga and Michael Bublé are battling it out for the theme song. Two completely different genre of music, but I absolutely cannot cannot decide who I think will win. Random, but I thought I'd share.

Awards Season: Padma Shri

Saif Ali Khan and Rekha received the Padma Shri this year for their contribution to Indian Cinema. Past winners have been Shahrukh Khan, Amir Khan, A.R. Rehman, Madhuri Dixit, Hema Malini, Shekhar Kapoor, Hariharan... all who are immensely talented. Rekha receiving this I understand... Saif? Mmm, not so much. No offense. He's talented forrr sure. I think about Omkara and am stunned by his acting skills, but I don't know if he's earned himself this award just yet. Either way... I can't help but marvel at how regal him and his arm-candy Kareena looked. He completely looks the title of "chote nawab" here.

Why don't our Bollywood men don sherwanis or kurta salwars more often? It takes their handsome level about ten notches higher than when they wear clothes intended for the youth. Just saying.

If I were to sit and post every magazine cover that our lovely stars grace I would be so behind... but this particular one was so stellar I couldn't not share.

WOW. Right? Right.

Waheeda Rehman Ji, Hema Malini Ji, Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone ALL ON ONE COVER? It kind of just takes your breath away... and then that record halting noise kicks in. Where the hell are the late '80s/early '90s ladies? Obviously getting all of these women on same date must have been hell and beyond but it would've just been perfect if Madhuri, Sridevi or Juhi were there. Regardless, I thought this cover was awesome.

Musical Madness

Hrithik Roshan is the latest actor to join the singing bandwagon. When I read about this I kind of rolled my eyes because I figured all reports were using the term loosely. I mean, remember when Amir Khan "sang" "Kya Bolti Tu" or Shahrukh "sang" "Apun Bola" but really both were just speaking in sing-songy ways. Or before the music of Devdas released everyone was talking about how Madhuri was being classically trained for a song and we heard... and it was good, but not the full-on singing we were all expecting.

Of course I had to check it out and I was pleasantly surprised! So surprised it's currently my latest obsession. This kind of music strikes a chord with me (pun unintended). I love it so much I'm willing to forgive the line "lovers forever." I mean, it's no secret that I hate when English is used in Hindi songs because it usually sounds ridiculous (not always). Anyway have a listen!

Btw, while we're all here talking about actors singing don't you feel like Kareena's singing in "Jab Nahin Aaye The Tum" from Dev was sort of shunned? It's not supposed to be wonderfully melodious, but it's so real and charming:

Laaastly, in my previous post I mentioned the film Sadiyaan... well here's a gem of a song that will probably go uncelebrated due to the film it's associated with. You'll only like it if you're into Richa Sharma and/or Qawwali-type songs. If that's up your alley check it out:

So there's this film I accidentally stumbled across, I have no idea how... titled "SADIYAAN." So I did some investigating. Generally, it wouldn't be a film I would even think to blog about but there are a few reasons why I've decided to share it with you. A) It stars Rekha, Hema Malini and Rishi Kapoor B) It's about Partition.

Point A is pretty self-explanatory... I mean, that's just a little too epic for anyone's own good. I'm wondering how much money they got out of this because... everything else about the movie is lacking. Let me fill you in, it's directed by Raj Kanwar (the wonderful man who brought Priyanka Chopra into our Bollywood lives), the lead actors are newbies Luv Sinha (Shatrugan Sinha's son) and Ferena Wazir and the music was composed by Adnan-I-miss-his-mota-self-Sami.

Point B... even though movies based on partition usually fall flat because the story is either biased and/or inaccurate I still want to watch because... Confession: I kind of have an obsession with partition. No, really. I think this quote sums up why "The ifs and buts of history... form an insubstantial if intoxicating diet." That's from one of my favorite books, A Suitable Boy, which incidentally takes place a few years after partition. Anyway, I never got the chance or was brave enough to ask the super-buzurgh-folk (basically the elderly) in my family about it. Learnin' about the Civil Rights Movement in the '60s during my U.S. History classes was intriguing and all, but this kind of history my family was a part of. You know? I don't know why I went on that spiel, but it's been festering inside for years now. Basically all I'm sayin' is that I like to see/read about anything dealin' with that and that's one of the reasons why this movie might have me as audience... some day. Not to mention the music is catchy. I'm not even going to bother subjecting you to the floptastic looking trailer. If you're curious look it up. Luv Sinha's acting makes Tushar Kapoor seem Oscar-worthy.

I keep forgetting to mention the upcoming film TEES MAAR KHAN directed by Farah Khan, starring Akshay Kumar, Akshay Khanna and Katrina Kaif (wow, lots of Ks going here). The music's being done by Vishal-Shekhar. From the looks of it, it's a typical love triangle and that the two men are con-artists. Reaaaaal original, Bollywood, real original. Farah Khan is the master behind this and I've liked her first two movies (Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om). Her films have been clever, satirical and funny with an OD of Bollywood masala... just the way I like it so we'll just have to wait for promos to drop before I judge any further. That will be a while though because the film's expected to drop late December.

Priyanka Chopra, who tried to keep her whereabouts an enigma, is currently in Kashmir shooting for Vishal Bhardwaj's Saath Khoon Maaf. Here are some absolutely lovely pictures of her whilst shooting there.

OMG. She looks so beautiful in that second picture! I can't get over it. There's also a picture of her in a full blown burqa. It's pretty tight.

From what I'm gathering, the film is about a woman who has seven husbands (I'm assuming at different times) and kills them off one by one... thus the title "Saath Khoon Maaf" (Seven Forgiven Murders/Forgiven Seven Murders). It's apparently based off of the book, Susanna's Seven Husbands by Ruskin Bond (another book adaptation. Is this Bwood's latest trend?). She claims the role is a really difficult one and is taking a toll on her. Oh, but Priyanka we have full faith in you! I mean, Shahrukh Khan didn't call you the greatest actress in Bollywood today for no reason. Anyway, the seven leading men are John Abraham, Vivaan Shah, Mohan Lal, Anu Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Naseeruddin Shah, and Irrfan Khan. Did your eyes glimmer with delight upon reading "Naseeruddin Shah?" Mine too. I mean, Naseeruddin + Priyanka + Vishal Bhardwaj... how can you go wrong. Oh... it's all too promising, so I'm going to calm down a bit and lower my expectations. Saath Khoon Maaf is expected to release sometime in 2011. I hope I'm misinformed and it's actually earlier. Haha, here's to hoping!

TRAILERS

FINALLY! The much much awaited and talked about KITES trailer has dropped. The film stars Hrithik Roshan, Barbara Mori, and Kangana Ranaut. It's directed by Anurag Basu and produced by daddy-dearest, Rakesh Roshan. The chemistry between Hrithik and Barbara is supposed to be incredibly hot. So hot that there were rumors of an alleged affair, but those died when wifey Sussanne Roshan claimed her and Barbara were friends. The dancing in this is supposed to be spectacular and I don't doubt it. It looks action packed, thrilling and passionate. Here's the theatrical trailer, you judge for yourself.

Next up is a promo for BADMASH COMPANY, the Shahid-Anushka starrer I talked about earlier.

This looks like Bunty aur Babli meets Dhoom, but honestly I don't mind. I'm loving the cast. Seeing Shahid-Anushka on screen is sooo refreshing. Nice, adorable, young and promising faces. AND IS THAT MEIYANG CHANG FROM INDIAN IDOL?? Oh, but it is. How did that even happen? I don't know nor do I care. I'm just glad to see him on screen again. (Btw, if you're wondering how/why there is a Chinese man who can speak Hindi so well don't be alarmed. He was born and raised in India. His family has been living in India for three generations. He's more Indian than I am American. Weird.) Also, I'm going to cross my fingers and hope for a good dance number... but all I sense are annoying club bangers... that are catchy and I grow to love and hate. P.S. this film is directed by Parmeet Sethi. Parm-who? "Kuljeet" from DDLJ, "Raj Malhotra" (the boss) from Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. He's also Archana Puran Singh's husband. Archana Puran Singh = "Ms. Borganza" from KKHH and "Preeto" from Mohabbatein.

Other upcoming films are BREAK KE BAAD which stars Deepika Padukone and Imran Khan. I haven't decided what it is about the two of them that's similar, but they are similar and I hope good things happen for them with this film.

Firangi Musicians

Somedays I find it ironic that I use the term "firangi."

Remember when Singh is King featured a song by Snoop Dogg and all the hooplah it caused, but then we heard the song and kind of laughed? And then remember when A. R. Rehman roped in Kylie Minogue for a song in Blue and everyone went buck wild until we heard the gibberish song-title, "Chiggy Wiggy" (still trying to figure out what that is exactly). Okay, so ready for this? Akon is the next to join the Bollywood bandwagon.

Mmmhm. Akon was roped in to feature a song in Anubhav Sinha's superhero film, Ra.One starring Shahrukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Vishal-Shekhar are the music directors of the film and claimed to have a great time recording with Akon. I am so super curious to hear this track. It's the most promising yet, but judging from previous Desi-American collaborations I'm not going to keep my expectations high. Oh, but it's sooo hard not to!

Okay, so while we're here talking about Ra.One, let me just give you the lowdown. It's supposed to be the second most expensive film made (Blue being the first most) and supposedly a science-fiction thriller. I bet Rakesh Roshan is pleased with himself for starting the "superhero" trend with Krrish. Arjun Rampal was supposed to play the villain. Man, that would've been awesome. Unfortunately he can't and was reportedly replaced by... Vivek Oberoi? This could work. I haven't decided how I feel about any of this superhero business yet. Thinking of SRK playing a superhero I'm instantly reminded of this hilarious scene from Om Shanti Om:

I can't decide if the title of this post is really cute or really perturbing?

Anyway, is this where life has come?! Actresses I watched as a child are now popping out children. Aah.

The very preggers Karishma Kapoor finally gave birth to a baby boy whom they've named "Kiaan." Hot. Baby Kiaan was born March 12, 2010. Lady Kapoor/Kapur? is already a mother to her five year old daughter, Samaira. I've gotta give it to the couple, they pick lovely names.

Whilst one just popped one out, we've got another fellow '90s actress waiting on deck. It's been reported that Kajol is pregnant with her second child. The Devgan couple has a seven year old daughter named Nysa. Ooh, so exotic.

So many little bolly babies running around, I wonder if any of them will follow their parent's footsteps. Shahrukh's got two kids he often fondly tweets about and Arjun Rampal has two daughters (can I get a collective "awww"). Oh I hope one of these kids continue the legacy, but the day that happens I will feel horrifically old.

I can't believe I let something like school get in the way of Bollywood! Sad days, man. I've been keeping up just never got around to gathering it and putting it here for your reading pleasure.

Of course I have missed a lot of major Bollywood moments i.e.: Bal Thackeray vs MNIK, MNIK meeting/exceeding expectations, Imran Khan officially engaged and um... my memory fails me. My point is, instead of trying to recap everything I'm just going to act like everything's already up to date.

Promos:
Alright, I hate getting trailers/promos from unofficial people but the EROS account doesn't let you embed :( So, I'm thankful for all the sketchoes who steal and upload trailers. On that note, here's one of EROS Ent.'s latest ventures, PAATSHAALA, starring Shahid Kapoor, Ayesha Takia, Nana Patekar & Sunil Shetty. Ah yes, I too, feel a yawn coming on. It has nothing with the actors individually, but seeing that group just doesn't sound promising. Here's the theatrical trailer

Here's a song I keep hearing (about) from the film, Aye Khuda, it makes it look a little more promising. ClICK HERE TO LISTEN.

After having watched both... are you instantly reminded of School of Rock too? No worries, it is probably only inspired by it because this film is a commentary on the shortcomings of the Indian education system. I shan't lie, I'm curious to watch it but probably will when it's on Colors or Imagine in a couple of months. The film is set to release April 9, 2010.

Next we've got Sajid Khan's second directorial venture (first being Heyy Babyy)"HOUSEFULL" starring: Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Arjun Rampal, Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta & Jiah Khan. It's like the A and A minus of Bollywood but I'm totally down with all six of them (yes, even Jiah Khan) this could make for a cheeky comedy... the trailer doesn't really disappoint, but you judge for yourself:

Riiight? That could be really cute. I love the last scene where Riteish goes nuts because he's all confused. It looks like, what my brothers and I call, "a Frasier situation." (That only makes sense if you watch(ed) Frasier... but basically it's where a whole bunch of misunderstandings occur, cleverly causing all kinds of hilarious drama.) Okay, one question though. Jiah Khan is actually from the UK so wouldn't it have made more sense to have her play Lara Dutta's role? Of course, they're actors they should be able to adapt to any role yada yada, but I mean really. I will admit though, seeing Jiah Khan in a "ghareloo" traditional role is going to be hella interesting. Btw, I have reason to believe that Akshay and/or Riteish's character(s) are into old-school songs/dance moves. We'll have to wait 'til April 30, 2010 to find out 'cause that's when the film releases. Also, on a semi-related note I forget how wonderfully handsome and stunning Arjun Rampal is... goooood God!!

Thirdly, we have pretty much the antithesis of Housefull aka a serious, artsy, targets real issues film titled THE GREAT INDIAN BUTTERFLY starring Sandhya Mridul, Aamir Bashir and Koel Puri. The film is supposed to release this weekend on March 26th. Won't say much else just watch the teaser:

... I love how they bleep out the word "sex." Yes, bleeping it out suddenly denies its existence. But that's another argument for another time. All I gotta say is that Sandhya Mridul is, like, the epitome of "bindaas." Anyway, all the other films had song promos and I skimmed through some and though some are worth showing I'm trying to keep this post "short" (for me, that is) but this song Thoda Thoda from The Great Indian Butterfly (okay guys, I keep chuckling as I type that...immature?) is really catchy: CLICK HERE TO LISTEN

Next up is JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI (JKSAH) starring Riteish Deshmukh and Jacqueline Fernandez. A cute little love story about a human and... an alien. Interesting. I have a feeling it will have the same fate as Aladin without all the pre-release hype or maybe a little better. Here is the trailer... and again it's the Riteish moment at the end that makes me laugh (happens around the 1:49 mark):

This next one isn't for the easily disturbed. PANKH starring Bipasha Basu, Maradone Rebello and Mahesh Manjrekar. I kept finding this title all over indie-cinema art-lovin' blogs but never got around to watching the trailer until just now. Just watch...

P.S. Tellywood fans, the adorable Sanjeeda Sheikh is set to star in this film as well. A desperate attempt to get her foot into films or is she an art-film-savvy kind of girl? Only time will tell...

What an interesting premise. I'm pretty sure the film is aiming for a "we're all trying to figure ourselves out" message but what a unique approach to take. This makes me worry for Ahsaas Channa. Say who?? The adorable little "boy" from Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and random commercials. Aha! Just as I had suspected. I discovered some (not too reliable) articles claiming Pankh was inspired by her story. I once read somewhere that her father and mother have separated over the issue. If I remember correctly it was the dad who was against it. Bichari, what a crazy childhood.

Friends:

I hardly ever have anything under my "and friends" categories, but today we do! So here's a quick update on poster-less/trailer-less films: Sonam Kapoor and Imran Khan just finished shooting for I Hate Luv Stories... like I mean JUST as in less than 24 hours ago. Karan Johar's Stepmom remake just began its last schedule of shooting. Apparently Kajol, Arjun and Kareena are shooting for a song. I'm trying really hard to place where in the story all three of them could have a fun song but failing miserably. Oh Bollywood, how I love thee. Don 2 is set to start shooting this summer/early September (that's by memory don't hold me to that). Dostana 2 is a 99% go. We know John and Abhi are back in but unsure as to whom the leading lady is. Mani Ratnam's Raavan is done filming and dubbing is almost complete as well. Kunal Kohli's Deepika-Imran starrer, Break Ke Baad, just began shooting in Delhi. Lastly, omfg! Vishal Bharadwaj recasted Priyanka Chopra in his next venture, tentatively titled "Saath Khoon Maaf." He got her to be a Marathi girl, I wonder what he'll make her do next? Here's to hopin' for great things for ALL of these films.

Awards Season: National Awards

Don't be confused. The National Awards that were recently announced are, not for the year 2009, but for 2008! Yeah... only slightly delayed.

Here is a list of most of the winners with a citation as to why they were chosen.

INDIRA GANDHI AWARD FOR BEST FIRST FILM OF A DIRECTOR: A Wednesday (Hindi)- For slick and searing exposure of the tension below the normal rhythm of life and the angst of the common man in Mumbai. Loved this film, glad it received recognition.

BEST POPULAR FILM PROVIDING WHOLESOME ENTERTAINMENT: Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (Hindi)- For its intelligent treatment of an off-beat subject that makes it different within the popular format.

BEST DIRECTION: Bala for Naan Kadauul (Tamil)- For its powerful handling of an extraordinary subject that focuses on marginal characters with great convection.

Ooooooookay.

A lot of people are questioning the validity of these awards, because the jury is never really acknowledged and no one knows who the nominees are, so it's kind of sketch. But of all the film awards that go on in India (to my knowledge) these seem the closest to being somewhat valid and the closest reflection of the critics' choice.

So there's a lot of outrage as to why Hindi Films got so many nods (particularly Arjun Rampal, Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and Roadside Romeo). I can't really sit here and argue which is deserving and which isn't because I'm not well versed with all the other regional films made. I read an insane amount of hateful comments (all on one website, though) about Priyanka Chopra's win being an undeserved one. Putting my die-hard fanaticism aside, I watched Fashion again yesterday. I really, truly, do think that was her career's best thus far (I think her best is yet to come). To be a hundred percent honest the first time I watched it I thought she did well, but it was the second time around that I really noticed what a fantastic job her performance was. I think a lot of people might be upset at her winning because she's a super mainstream-commercial-epitome-of-Bollywood actress who does films like "Pyaar Impossible." Or I might just sound like a crazed fan giving an irrational argument, I can't decide. Anyway, the last time the Best Actress Award was given to a Hindi film actress was in 2002 (Tabu for Chandni Bar) so, irrespective of what people have to say, props to PC! Arjun receiving Best Supporting, does make me wonder a teeny bit. He did a good job, no doubt. I even mentioned how I felt that he was underrated, but think about Paresh Rawal's performance in Mumbai Meri Jaan. I mean, there's no denying he owned the role in true Paresh fashion. Or even his role(s) in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! Speaking of Mumbair Meri Jaan, I do wish it was recognized a little more. For what? I don't know, but I do know it was a good film. Laastly, What did Kangana do differently in Fashion from any of her other films? Okay, that's just me hating... but I do kind of mean that.

The dissection of these awards could go on and on so I'm just going to end this, but before I do...

Can I get a "HELL YEAH!" for (my absolute absolute favorite) Shreya Ghoshal on her win for two songs?? This is her FOURTH National Award win and she's only twenty-five! [Btw, if you're curious she's won for: Bairi Piya (Devdas), Dheere Jalna (Paheli), and Yeh Ishq Hai (Jab We Met)]

Another weekend, another line up of videos.

Dance India Dance

Before I do this past weekends, there's one I forgot to post from last weekend that I think deserves a nod. Kruti Mahesh's performance in the "Dance ki Kasowti." Firstly, I think she's a strong contender to make it near, if not to, the finals. One of those "slowly but surely" situations. Secondly, a dance to a shayari/kavita fused with "Albela" from HDDCS what. a. concept. Terrance was right, there is no one but Kruti who would do justice to the performance. I adore this:

Onto this week. I really really liked almost every dance barring a few so I'm having a really hard time picking which ones I loved the most. First choice is obvious, our lady-love Shakti, who performed a hat trick and got a Grand Salute from Mithun for the third consecutive week. Something similar happened to Salman (last year's winner) then he had a dip, but came out a winner. Anyway the Shakti-Kunwar duo performed to "Aankhon ki Gustakhiyan" from HDDCS. Props to Terrance, he reinvents played out songs with his innovative choreography/themes. First Khuda Jaane and now this song.

Next performance is Binny's from Dance ki Kasowti. I'm going to secretly admit I didn't like her in the tryout rounds, but she's really proved herself through her performances once the actual show began. This act, in particular, won my respect for her. Whenever she's using the metal contraption (that moves beyond her control) there isn't a trace of trepidation to be seen on her face. Seee for yourself. Binny dancing to O Re Piya from Aaja Nachle:

Next is a typical Dharmesh act a.k.a amazing no words to be said, but I will say that I'm ready to see something new from him. I realize I'm probably going to be taken to the gallows for that comment. Don't get me wrong I REALLY REALLY enjoy his performances and he is, undoubtedly, one of the bests in his forte', but for the sake of versatility I would love to see something else. I don't doubt he could do it. Anyway here's his dance to "Churake Dil Mera" from Main Khiladi Tu Anari:

Laaastly, is another "slowly but surely" type: Parvez Rehmani. What a talented guy. His performance to "Beete Lamhe" from The Train was a completely different genre from his previous hip-hop performance to "Pag Ghungroo" I can't wait to see what he does next, until then watch this:

Music Ka Maha Muqabla

First up we've got the talented (and winner of Star Voice of India- chote Ustaads) Aishwarya Majmudar singing "Laga Chunari Mein Daag" it's really refreshing to hear it in a female voice. No embedding allowed so click here to watch :)

Next fave video was Sharib Sabri's performance to, his own creation, O Soniyo from Raaz 2. I can't get the entire video because the MKMM account uploads the episode, not by performances, but by time limit. Grr. So here's the second half of his preformance. I'm just going to say it. Back when Twinkle Khanna was acting I thought she was SO pretty. Now she's considered one of Bollywood's few fashionistas. I'm glad I always supported her. What I would give to own a Leger Bandage Dress, what I would give to own a McQueen Skull clutch, what I would give to have Akshay as arm candy. Alas, I have none of these so I shall vicariously live through Twinkle 'Tina' Khanna...Kumar? I do wish she omitted the necklace, but it wouldn't be a complete Twinkle outfit without her usual statement necklace.

Is it just me or is Sridevi ALWAYS wearing black/navys? Just sayin'. She, too, wore Herve Leger to the function and looks loverly... as much as someone who's had plastic surgeries can anyway.

Awards Season: Apsara Awards

It's the most wonderful time of the year, awards season is here! More than the actual (usually unjust)awards, I really just enjoy seeing the film industry come together, the performances (though these days they're 80% flashy and 20% dance. Sad story) and to reflect on how much has changed... and lately I've enjoyed seeing what they wear because India is finally stepping up their game when it comes to attire at award functions. We have a while to go before it's anything like Umrika's, but enjoyable nonetheless.

The first of the awards show was the Apsara Awards (to air on NDTV Imagine April 12), then The Star Screen Awards (to air on Star Plus) and the most recently held Stardust Awards (to air on one of the Sonys). I'll refrain from mentioning who won what in case you want to watch when they're aired. At the end of the season, I'll tally everything up. It will be fun to reflect, no? Yes. Until then... here are some pictures from the Apsara Awards for you to salivate over.

Look at who finally made up:

Finally! The real sari is making a comeback. By "real" I mean no over-the-top-blingified slutacious blouses. It's so classy, and beautifully epitomizes the Indian female. WHY don't actresses sport this more often? Surriously.

What an absolutely lovely shade of pink (coral?) and it really compliments her skin tone. She looks ethereal.

Dia... Dia, Dia, Dia. Will you ever give me a reason to hate you?

Looking at this photo, I want to refer to her as Jaya Bhaduri instead of Bachchan. She looks rejuvinated.

First off we finally get a glimpse of Prakash Jha's, much talked about, RAJNEETI. Eeks.

I said "eeks" earlier because it's going to be hella interesting to see Arjun Rampal, Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in this type of film. I won't be surprised if Rampalshines, he's an underrated actor. As for the latter two, I hope it displays a new dimension in their actings skills. More than Ranbir though, it's Katrina I'm anxious to see. I'm curious to see how she handles the role.

Neeext we've got a song promo of KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK featuring the song Uff Teri Ada (psssst, the music has released, but I have yet to check it out. Let me know if you have). Oh boo, embedding's been disabled so here's the link, enjoy! The song is nothing special, maybe a little catchy. I like the picturisation of it though. It seems like it develops their relationship and characters well.

Lastly, here are a bunch of song promos for VEER. Oh boo embedding has been disabled AGAIN. Is it because people like me post it on blogs?? Doesn't that help their promotion though? Odd. I'll just have to, graciously, provide the links I suppose.

Taali Promo: This was picturised almost exactly how I had envisioned it. Creepy. Also, isn't Neena Gupta a little too old to be playing (what she was once best at) 'nautanki'esque roles? (Sidenote: If you can't remember who Neena Gupta is, think the other chick from Choli Ke Peeche.)

I get the same creeped out feeling from all the Veer promos as I did while watching Lucky- no time for love. The sets and costume are all well done and I appreciate it. It's just personal taste, I don't like it.

"Wah-Wah" Worthy Reality TV

So I've been really bad at this and missed last weekend, but I promise I'll be consistent starting this weekend!

Here are the top three performances from DID from this past weekend and one from the weekend before. I have a lot, but for length's sake I'm going to post a few to keep it short.

Yes, there's a huge Shakti bias going on on this site... haha, but this dance is just so lovely!

I knew Parvez was good but this dance just proves him to be near the ranks of Dharmesh. This was just pure entertainment, I loved every moment of it.

And anyone who follows the show, or even if they don't most probably have seen this AMAZING number by Kunwar and... who else? Shakti. I used to love the song "Khuda Jaane", then it got played out and now watching it again I've falling in love all over again. What a beautiful dance and HOW CLEAN ARE SHAKTI'S LINES?

Onto MKMM here are four videos I recall loving. Forgive if I've missed some, this is what happens when you don't update consistently. Sigh.

This next fave. performance came as a surprise. I didn't really know about Neeti Mohan, but I figured she must be talented if Shankar picked her to be on his team. This performance to Namak Laga was well done. Her attitude was perfect and her dancing just added to the performance. After the performance I was google-ing her when I realized I've seen her live! She sang at the A.R. Rehman concert. The entire concert we were trying to figure out who this talented chick was and a year and some odd months later my question's been answered. Hooray! Sorry for the rant, but I was excited:

Laaastly, how I could I NOT post something Shreya-related? Her live performances sound like a recording! I only hope to hear her live someday. this is her performance of "Yeh Zindagi Ussi Ki Hai" from the film Anarkali.

sorry I didn't really provide much analysis or opinion in this post, but in the weeks to come I'll do it I promise!

Forthcoming Films

KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY (KHJJS): Before anything, can I just say how old school that poster looks? Like a flop movie from 1995. Just saying. Anyway, it's directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar, stars Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan and is produced by Ashutosh Gowariker Productions and PVR Pictures. The release date is undecided but is expected to be sometime at the end of 2010. KHJJS is based on Manini Chatterjee's book Do and Die: The Chittagong Uprising 1930-1934.

I feel like I wouldn't be able to sum up the uprising properly so here's a link to the Wikipedia article. I have no idea how accurate it is. It's nice to see a film will be showcasing what present-day Bangladesh was like in the pre-independence era. I'm not sure if Bangladesh allows Bollywood films to be shot there. I'm going to guess not because they've been shooting in Goa. Hm, I wonder why they didn't film in West Bengal? On another note, let's hope Manini is aware of how much of the film is based on the book and where in the film she's going to recieve credit ;) Glad to see Gowarikar is slipping back into his comfort zone after the disastrous What's Your Rashee? The film originally had Asin the leading role, but she opted out a month after signing claiming the role wasn't substantial enough. I wonder what the script of London Dreams had over this one? Maybe her choosiness is a result of London Dreams not doing well? So many question, no answers so let's just move onto the next film.

ATITHI TUM KAB JAAOGE? Directed by Ashwani Dhir, stars Konkona Sen Sharma and Ajay Devgan and produced by Wide Frames Films and Warner Bros. The film's about a distant relative (Paresh Rawal) who overstays his welcome in a happily married couple's home. Licences to Wed anyone? Paresh looks very Baburao Ganpatrao Apte from Hera Pheri, but this looks so funny and the following picture literally made me l-o-l:

The film's expected to release February 26, 2010.

Next up we have a Shyam Benegal movie, yaaaay. He's going the comedy route again, after Welcome to Sajjanpur, with WELL DONE ABBA which was formerly titled Abba ka Kuan. It stars Boman Irani, Minnisha Lamba, Sameer Dattani, and Ila Arun This film, too, is inspired by a book! I'm not even going to make jokes about whether it'll be controversial or what not because that's so beneath Benegal's caliber. Anyway the books he was inspired by were Narsaiyyan Ki Bavdi (I really want to say that word is "bawli") by Jeelani Bano and Phulwa Ka Pul by Sanjeev and a short film. The plot is about Arman Ali (Boman Irani) who takes leave from his work in Mumbai to find a groom for his daughter (Minnisha Lamba) who lives somewhere near Hyderabad (represent!). He goes back to his job after three months where he's waiting to be fired. Story's simple but I can't wait to see how Benegal plays it all out. It's going to be cool to see Irani under Shyam's direction. What a talented combo. Also, I'm really happy that Lamba was casted, I feel like she has potential. Even though Yahaan (her debut film) wasn't appreciated I fell in love with her in it and I think she did well with what she had in the story Pooranmasi in Dus Kahaniyaan. Maybe I just like seeing her in conservative roles, which may be the case for this film too.

Well friends, I'm pretty tired but watch out for posts mentioning 'Action Replay' starring Jr. Bachchan and Wifey Rai-Bachchan, 'Striker' starring Southern sensation Siddharth (best alliteration ever) and 'Crooked' starring Farhan Akthar, Hrithik Roshan and a third unsure party. Whoa, all those titles are in English.

"Wah-Wah" Worthy Reality TV

I'm ashamed to admit that I'm an Indian reality TV fiend. Particularly the talent show ones. I'm aware of all the flaws and how some of the drama's fabricated, but I don't care. Two shows I'm currently following are Music Ka Maha Muqabla (MKMM) and Dance India Dance (DID). MKMM has a stellar judge line up (Shankar Mahadevan, Shreya Ghoshal, Shaan, Himmesh Reshammiya, Mohit Chauhan and Mika), but the only downfall of the show is that it's filmed in a concert atmosphere so the competition focuses on performances and hype as opposed to raw talent. It will pick up pace soon though, I hope.

I decided to post standout performances from this past weekend and will hopefully continue to do so every weekend.

Anyway here are my favorite videos from DID from this past week:

The beginning is cut off and I'm so pissed, but here's Shakti performing to Loosen Up My Buttons by the Pussycat Dolls. Because she's a trained dancer, she takes the performance from trashy sexy to pure sultry, something rarely seen in India (in my opinion). Be sure to listen to Mithun's reaction, it's hilarious:

On Saturday almost ALL the performances were amazing so this was one I could think of off the top of my head. He's pretty much captured everyone's heart. It's not that well known, but Dharmesh was the winner of Boogie Woogie's Mahayudh or maybe it was Ustaadon Ke Ustaad (can't remember the title) competition about a year maybe two ago.

America's a week behind in MMKM. Star Plus is so annoying when it comes to reality TV. Zee and Sony always have their ish up to date w/ us. Anyway here's my fave performance for the weekend:

Vineet, who was the runner up of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 went on to participate in other singing shows such as Joh Jeeta Wohi Superstar and now MKMM. Personally, I'm not that big of a fan, but there's no denying he's talented:

Music for MY NAME IS KHAN released in India today! I am eagerly eagerly anticipating to listen to it. After hearing a clip in the Sajda promo, I think we may have a potential love affair in the making. Anyway, here's the incredibly promising audio list:

The music is directed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy and lyrics by Niranjan Iyengar who's better known for writing dialogues.

Also, my verdict on VEER is a good one. I wasn't disappointed by the tracks at all. I like the songs in this order:

1) Kanha - A sultry Rekha Bhardwaj thumri... there's no going wrong. I just really, really love this style of music.

2) Salaam Aaya - A playful romantic number that hits all the right chords (pun intended).

3) Taali- Chorus version - Sukhwinder Singh's fierce voice is matched with a lot of percussion. This could have potentially been number two, but the song gets a little too repetitive.

4) Surili Ahkiyon Duet - I hate to see a Rahat number so far down on my list! All the other songs are just that good and this number doesn't sound all that different from his other tracks, but it's still lovely and I really like the lyrics.

5) Meherbaniyaan - This song I was disappointed with. I was hoping to hear some magic from Sonu Nigam, though he didn't let down with his singing (does he ever?). This song just hits me the wrong way and sounds out of place with the rest of tracks. I think it's supposed to be an upbeat old Western piece, but I'm personally not feeling it but again Sonu Nigam's singing is commendable.

Overall the songs are good the first time around but really grow on you. The only ones I instantly loved were Kanha and Salaam Aaya.

Wohoo! The first teaser of KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK finally dropped!

A little birdie tells me (and I do mean that almost literally because I'm referring to Twitter) that Karsh Kale is helping with the background score! Along with Midival Punditz and Farhan Akhtar. If you're in the dark about who Karsh Kale and Midival Punditz are, they're both amazing fusion artists. I can't express how soulful and soothing their music is so I'm going to leave you with this video I stumbled upon with both of them performing at The Paleo Festival in Geneva. You're seriously in for a treat:

I know I'm supposed to feel really empowered by this, but the only thing that really intrigues me in this entire mess of a trailer is Riteish. The rest of it is so stereotypical Ram Gopal Varma that I've become immune to it. You?

All Izzn't Well

... but MOST izz well with 3 IDIOTS.

Let's start with the plus points. To begin with, this movie was easily one of the most anticipated movies of the year so obviously it had a huge opening weekend. Number two, not only did it open huge it totally met up to ALL the hype that was built up before the release. This film is breaking records and here are some stats to prove it. According to India's Business Standard Newspaper, 3 Idiots has made 51 million dollars (2.4 billion rupees) from the global market taking the title of the biggest Bollywood blockbuster, moving Ghajini down a spot which had made 2.25 billion rupees.

Truth be told, I was really nervous about this movie for two reasons. Firstly, Amir Khan (AK) was to be playing a college student, how on earth was that going to be pulled off? But it somehow did. I caught myself trying to disassociate myself from the charm, while watching the movie, to see if he did look too old for the part but I couldn't see it so AK succeeded. Who's surprised though? Secondly, how many directors manage a hat trick? Let alone a newbie director? Rajkumar Hirani met awesome success with his directorial debut, Munnabhai M.B.B.S.. He then went on to create a sequel, Lage Raho Munnabhai and proved the skeptics wrong and the nation was swept with Gandhigiri. Could he really have a third superhit? Welp, he did... who thinks he can go for a fourth with Munnabhai Chale Amerika?

Now for the negative... er 'negative.' Those who keep up with the Bollywood world know that 3 Idiots was inspired by Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone - What not to do at IIT. Now those of you who really really keep up with the Bollywood world/live in India know that there is/was a feud between Bhagat and The 3 idiots team. So here's what I've gathered: Chetan, like any blogger, expressed how he felt on his blog. He felt cheated. Upon reading the script, he was under the impression that the film was only going to be 5% of his book. After watching the film, he claims there were countless similarities and that he he wasn't recognized properly. Which, irrespective of how much was borrowed, I do think the film makers should have given recognition at the beginning instead of the ending during the credits. At the same time, however, Bhagat should've paid attention while signing the contract. So, in my opinion, it goes both ways. Also, during a press conference with the 3 Idiots teams one duffer of a journalist inquired/accused the team about the Bhagat controversy without having read the book. So Mr. Chopra doesn't have any of it and speaks without thinking and the journalists, in turn, are outraged and demand an apology. I'm reminded of a scene out of some sort of Madhur Bandharkar film. To my knowledge, no solution was really reached just a lot of drama but the dispute's finally ended.

I wish I had an excuse for my hiatus from blogging, but I don't. I let winter break get the best of me and I went into 100% lazy mode. So I apologize.

Here are some overdue trailers and stills:

Here's the first song promo, Sajda, from MY NAME IS KHAN:

The song is so divine. I can't wait to hear it in its entirety. I'm also pleased to see the Shajol (as the duo's been christened) magic is alive and evident. I was afraid it wouldn't meet up to it's insanely high expectations thanks to the hype.

Next up is RGV (Ram Gopal Verma)'s upcoming film, RANN. It features Riteish Deshmukh, Amitabh Bachchan, Sudeep, Neetu Chandra, Mohnish Behl, Paresh Rawal and Gul Panag. I'm happy/surprised Riteish was casted, even if RGV films haven't been up to par as of late. Hopefully it will reveal a shade of Riteish's acting skills we haven't seen before. Paresh, it appears, will be taking on the role of a villain. Something we haven't seen a while and something he is pretty freakin' good at.

The film's plot centers around the corruption of the media. An appropriate topic to approach because, evidently, there has been a lot of resentment toward the media in India as of late. According to the celebs, anyway but do they ever like the media?? Anyhow check out this trailer of RANN:

After the success of his two critically acclaimed films (Khosla Ka Ghosla and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! )Dibakar Banerjee is ready to drop his latest directorial venture, LOVE, SEX, AUR DHOKA also known as LSD. The film is about voyeurism and was inspired by an incident that occurred in Delhi. Apparently, a girl was getting intimate with her boy toy while he recorded her on his phone and later sent a mass text with the footage and soon it went viral all over Delhi. Sound familiar? Anurag Kashyap featured a similar scene in Dev D. The Delhi incident isn't the only instance and these scandals have caused quite some drama. Director Banerjee says,

The film is not just about the MMS scandal but shows what happens before it. It is about love in our real life and love in Bollywood. It is about what media makes of spy camera investigations

. he also goes on to say it's about "the digital eyes that surround us everywhere." It's a bold film and I'm excited to see what he does with it. The film's produced by the queen of telly, Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Motion Pictures. I love how the topic of her soaps are so insanely unrealistic (I'm guilty of watching some, though) and this movie touches upon a very real subject. See for yourself, check out this trailer:

Lastly, here is the movie poster for KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK. Deepika looks freaksihly like Priyanka Chopra... again. Last time I thought that was in Om Shanti Om.

Oh and if for some freakish reason you haven't caught the My Name Is Khan trailer check it out! We've seen the Bollywood touch on the terrorist drama multiple times before (most recent being Kurbaan) but because of the big names involved this one seems like it may come out a winner, plus the whole autism twist helps. Which, that angle too, isn't all that original. Taare Zameen Par, Koi Milgaya, Main Aisa Hi Hoon all feature a character with a type of disability. I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Here's the trailer:

Am I Nuts? Sisters From Another Mister

Mmm... maybe not "sisters from another mister" in this case but more like long-lost-daughter or something like that.

A couple of days ago Chaudvin Ka Chand was on TV, and as a devout Waheeda fan (and even Guru Dutt and that entire camp) it was only appropriate I watch it again. So I did. As I'm watching something strikes me that never has before...

Doesn't Sonam Kapoor look like Waheeda Rehman? Not a carbon copy or anything, but there are definitely "jhalaks" er factors that strongly remind me of her. Both of them have large expressive eyes and semi-pouty lips on their beautifully petite faces. Here's a picture of the two. You decide:

Now, I don't know if I'm really delayed in making this comparison and if it's a commonly said thing or... I am completely nuts. I'm going to go ahead and guess that it's not a commonly said thing because remember when Cine Blitz launched their book? The cover was an homage to Pyaasa in which they had Katrina Kaif pose as Waheeda. Still scratching my head on that one... it should have OBVS been Sonam! Again, I could be really off because I go through phases where I make really outrageous comparisons. When I went through my Shilpa Shetty phase, I thought Jennifer Aniston looked like her. When I went through my Dimple Kapadia phase, I thought Sandra Bullock looked like her (I still agree with that one).

Am I Nuts? "Inspiration"

Once, a long time ago (in a far away land), I did some major Sharmila Tagore stalking via Youtube so now I get suggestions to watch videos of hers and one such video was the song "Kisi Raah Mein" from Mere Hamsafar. I forgot what a gem-of-a-song it was so I decided to watch/listen to it. As am I'm listening, I feel like I'm experiencing deja vu and I can't decide why when it dawns upon me. I'm listening to the words "mere humsafar" with that classic beat from the song "mere humsafar" from Refugee.

One of Anu Malik's most celebrated pieces, "Mere Humsafar" from Refugee wasn't as original as we'd hoped. I know Anu is notorious for jacking tunes and such, but I really wish Refugee wasn't on that list of stolen/inspired tunes. Alright, so it's not completely stolen but that note-worthy tabla-beat in the background of the song "Mere Humsafar" was used in "Kisi Raah Mein." Coincidence? I think not. Maybe it is, but that's doubtful. Here are both the videos. Am I nuts??

OMFG, I think the music of Veer is going to be awe-some. I should've thought twice about it, but didn't and now I've come across an audio list of the songs and judging from the titles/singers/lyricists it seems like it's going to be good stuff. Here's the list, judge for yourself:

Okay, an album that features Sonu Nigaam, Shreya Ghoshal, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Sukhwinder Singh, Roopkumar Rathod, The (new age) Sabri Brothers, Rekha Bhardwaj and a Thumri (yeah, I'm an old woman at heart)... you've got to be REALLY talented in order to screw that one up. I am hyped. I love when good soundtracks come out because I want to prove all the folks (who's 'all'? The haters on Youtube, artists from yesteryear, etc.) that in this day and age we DO have awesome talent and can create legendary, traditional INDIAN music. No pressure, Sajid-Wajid.

The music is expected to release December 18th.

Happy 87th Birthday to Yusuf "Dilip Kumar" Khan!

Mr. Kumar has been associated with some of the greatest films in India Cinema. He holds the most award for "Filmfare Best Actor"(eight) and was honored the Dadasaheb Phalke Award so it's safe to say he's the REAL King Khan though his nickname "Tragedy King" is fitting. It's so awesome to have an actor from the Golden Era alive today. When Mughal-E-Azam was re-released in color, he was the only existing cast memeber. Imagine!

Just wanted to wish the big guy, that's all :)

Yippie Ay Oh Kye Ay! Priyanka Chopra is currently in South Africa gearing up to be one of the ten judges for the Miss World contest. HOLLER! Okay, so I guess it shouldn't be that surprising or exciting seeing how she is an alumni of the competition.

Priyanka Chopra won the Miss World competition in the year 2000 at the tender age of 18, apparently one of the youngest winners. Here's a video of her crowning moment:

I held my breath when they announced the winner as if I didn't already know results.

Stills of KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK (KCK) have finally slipped out! Quick sidenote: does the title 'Karthik Calling Karthik' remind you of "Kramer VS Kramer"? Me too. Anyway check the stills out!

I really like the close-up shot. Something very chilling in the way Deepika's looking at the camera.

Next fillum. I'm so so so ashamed, I didn't know about this film earlier. I came across it while doing some Vidya Balan stalking. It's titled ISHQIYA, slated to release January 29th, directed by Abhishek Chaubhey (writer for Omkara), produced by Shemaroo Ent. & Vishal Bhardwaj and stars Naseerudding Shah, Arshad Warsi and Vidya Balan. I accidentally read a plot of the story, but I think it may have revealed too much so I'll spare you the info. Watch the trailer and enjoy! Um... since the film IS associated with Vishal Bhardwaj don't be surprised by the vulgar language. Just warnin' ya!

at 0:46 I'm reminded of 'City of God', you? This looks like it could work... for a select crowd. Omkara, obviously, had a lot of the same flavor as this movie but it also had a lot of big names that brought in a crowd who, otherwise, wouldn't enjoy such films. Just a guess, anyway. It will probably receive a lot of critical acclaim. What do you think?

So, I randomly caught this on TV the other day and remember reading about it a while ago. It completely slipped my mind to post it here until I saw it on TV. The film is titled RAAT GAYI BAAT GAYI (RGBG), starring Neha Dhupia, Vinay Pathak & Rajat Kapoor, directed by Saurabh Shukla, and produced by Rangita Pritish Nandy & Rajat Kapoor. It's slated to release on New Years Eve... hm ironic (once you watch the trailer, you'll understand). Anyway, Vinay and Rajat are both fine actors and I've always said that I'm probably the only Neha Dhupia fan out there (alllright, so from the looks of it, I'm a lot of celebs' fans. I guess it's why I love the movie industry!). It has already won a lot of acclaim at many film festivals, which doesn't surprise me. So check out this lovely trailer:

Yes, yes, yes I realize it seems heavily inspired by The Hangover and most people are probably under that impression which is why Director Saurabh had a statement ready to deny it. He says,

"It's untrue; both these films are nothing alike. Let me clarify that I started Raat Gayi Baat Gayi much before The Hangover was made. I thought of Raat Gayi Baat Gayi when I attended a certain house party a while back. I was feeling terribly bored and kept staring at people aimlessly. The next morning, I narrated the episode to Rajat, who suggested that I write a story revolving around a party. That's how the story of Raat Gayi Baat Gayi took shape."

Since I want to believe it, I'm going to. It is a pretty simple storyline.

Next up. I've held back from showing you every single Rocket Singh promo there's been, cause there are a lot. But this one I had to... it has Gauhar Khan (the chick at 0:13). :)

Not sure why I'm still dropping promos of the films seeing as how it just released today. An insider of Filmfare who just got done watching the film and I mean JUST got done (technology, how I love thee) says,

"Rocket Singh, definitely one of the best movies this year!. Ranbir as a sardar is awesome, so is supporting cast"

I'm also reading from others that...

"[it] orbits sales world charmingly. Adorable, drama-free, super-witty, superbly paced-story & dialogues. Plot flows smoothly."

Am I Nuts? Sisters From Another Mister

So about a year or two ago, I went on a wild wild rampage searching for the movie 'Rang.' I don't know why. It wasn't a hit, but I HAD TO WATCH IT... mostly because I'm a Divya Bharti fan (I don't know if it's because she's forever young, or what but I love her). Anywhere it was NOWHERE to be found on the internet, which is just really bizarre because every movie and their mom is on the internet. Anyway, now when it comes on TV I feel it is only my duty to watch or DVR it. It's only come on twice... a couple of days ago being the second time. Anywaaay, I was watching it today and I cannot get over how similar Anushka Sharma and Divya Bharati look. I said it right when I saw the promos for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and I'll say it again. They should have used Anushka in Om Shanti Om because I'm convinced the story of the film was inspired by Divya's death.

Anyway, I pulled together a picture of the two sisters from another mister and I want your opinion. Am I nuts?? Holler at a sister.

Paa-tastic!

PAA released this weekend and, as was expected, is doing wonderfully or as my cheesy title suggests, 'Paa-tastic.'

Like I said earlier, I try to refrain from reading reviews until I've seen the film myself. What I've gathered, though, is that it's a feel good film that is definitely worth watching because it's a different story told in a heart-warming manner. That's pretty much the universal opinion. Amit Ji is to have done a phenomenal job. Such a good job that people forget it's him playing 'Auro.' And recieiving just as much hype as Big B, is NOT Jr. Bachchan, but Ms. Balan! I'm really, really happy to hear that. She claims she hasn't recieved this much attention since Parineeta. I freaking loved her in Parineeta. Mr. Masand (famed critic) tweeted this while watching the film:

"Best Actress race just widened. Priyanka (Kaminey), Konkona (LBC), Kareena (Kurbaan) please make room for Vidya Balan. She's superb in Paa."

I felt like Vidya was cheated out of awards for her performance in Bhool Bhulaiyaa. I mean I was, legitimately, mortified during the 'exorcism' scene but then again Kareena was also really deserving that year. Wow, my heart just warmed at the thought of all the talented actresses currently in Bollywood. Anyway, Rajeev Masand also went on to say that she carried the film (along with AB, of course). I don't know why, but I'm really excited. Like a child of mine is being praised or something. Remember when I posted the promo and I said I liked the scene where they're jumping in the puddle? I feel like I subconsciously knew... haha okay, yes I realize I'm getting carried away. Any how the premiere was as star-studded as ever... here are a few pictorials for you to enjoy!

Basically if you're someone who is anyone, you were there.

Forthcoming Films

So, this completely slipped my mind in my past 'Forthcoming Films' posts.

ANJAANA ANJAANI starring Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor (definitely just wrote 'Priyanka Kapoor and Ranbir Chopra' it was awkward, but don't those names flow?, directed by Siddharth Anand of Salaam Namaste/Ta Ra Rum Pum/Bachna Ae Haseeno fame and produced by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.. Judging from his previously directed movies I guess it's safe to assume this is going to be another young, life as an 'NRI' flick. The only difference with this film compared to his previous ones is that it's under a different production camp, but what a difference that's made. When I think of his three previous movies I automatically imagine the title to be in bright yellow/blue/white colors (am I alone on that?), and the leading duo dressed in flamboyantly colored yet trendy clothes. I'm really digging this sleek monochromatic mature-clothing look. It really speaks volumes about the film.

The film is slated to release October 1, 2010. Hoo-wee. They just started shooting for it, so makes sense. Priyanka Chopra just recently returned from a shooting schedule in Bangkok for the film (Shahid Kapoor was also there for another film. They supposedly had din din... maybe for closure's sake). I have high hopes for this Priyanka-Ranbir jodi.

Man, the promos just never stop dropping. I'm not complaining. They're not spectacular by any means, but I'll take it.

A lovey-dovey number from Chance Pe Dance titled "Pal Mein Hi":

I get a very "Bakhuda Tumhi Ho" vibe. You? Also, I must admit I didn't really think much of the Genelia-Shahid pairing, but it seems to be really cute in this video. I am horrified by one thing though and that is how at 1:50 it looks like Genelia is teaching Shahid how to dance. Come on... don't tell me she's a dance instructor! At least get someone who can dance! Okay, I'm being a drama queen she's not baaaad but she's not good either. Ugh.

The other promo is a song titled '10 on 10' from Pyaar Impossible:

So... I hate to say this. I really really do, but doesn't this whole thing (minus the last part w/ Uday's fantasy sequence) remind you of a climatic scene in a severely teeny bopper film like, "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" or some Disney Channel Original? Anyway, if anyone can pull off playing a young college 'rocker' chick without looking absolutely ridiculous it is Priyanka (or I could just be really biased). Anyhow, I'm still looking for that trailer because it was better than these song promos.

Also, I was asked what this movie was about so here's what little I can reveal: It's just a typical story about beauty and the geek. I think The Beauty may currently be in a dead-end relationship (with Dino Morea) or is confused and thinks that he's the one when it's, obviously, The Geek. Yeah, sorry there isn't much to be said. Oh, the film is directed by the masoom bacha from Masoom, the bhola naujavaan from Mohabbatein/Papa Kehte Hain, the director aadmi of Roadside Romeo, the guy who has KJO as a BFF but still can't seem to find success a.k.a Jugal Hansraj. He seems talented, just not doing the right thing at the right time.

Forthcoming Films

Okie Dokie Smokie.

Vere to begin?

Let me start with movies that have been talked about for a while:

*AISHA: Directed by Rajshree Ojha, starring Sonam Kapoor & Abhay Deol (hello, lovely combo), and Ira Dubey (Lilette Dubey's daughter), produced by daddy dearest Anil Kapoor and sister dearest Rhea Kapoor. The music is composed by Amit Trivedi (think Amir & Dev D.... disappointing? I think not.) It's expected to release in early 2010. The film is based on Jane Austen's Emma and if you haven't read that then think 'Clueless'- A young socialite who is obsesed with hooking people up. In Aisha, Sonam plays a Delhi socialite obsessed with match-making. Who better than Sonam to play that role? Seriously. I can't wait to see her clothes. Here's a picture of her on the sets of Aisha enjoying, what looks to be, gelato. I wish I could pull off blue linen shorts like her... alas, we're not all fierce fashionistas:

So... it's really hard not to be excited for this film, but I always do this to myself. I need to stop having any sort of expectations!

Next up we have yet another Sonam Kapoor starrer (hollaaa) and Imran Khan starrer (double hollaa) titled "I HATE LOVE STORIES" (though I've read "Luv" instead of "love" in some places. God help me, I hope it's not true!)The movie is directed by Bwood's favorite designer, Manish Malhotra's brother Punit Malhotra and produced by... any guesses? Dharma Productions. Surprise surprise. The film just started shooting this past October and not sure about a release date. Oh and Brazilian hottie, Bruna Abdullah, is to make a cameo in the film. Don't get confused, this isn't Gisele the Brazilian Hottie from Love Aaj Kal. Anyway, that's all we know for now. I'll keep you updated :)

Another KJo venture is the remake of Stepmom! We don't know the name yet, but I highly doubt it's "Sauteli Ma" except I wish it were 'cause that would be hilarious. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that he got the rights to remake the film, but I'm not 100% sure. The film isn't directed by the man himself, though it is a Dharma Productions venture. It is directed by his protege Siddharth Malhotra. Damn, this Dharma camp is growing huuuuge. Is it even exclusive anymore? Any how since you're dying to know, the film stars Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal. Eee, I see no flaws. Last time we saw the two leading ladies together was in K3G... oh how things have changed (mostly for Kareena):

I'm not done talking about Dharma Productions. Next we've got DOSTANA 2! Which, unfortunately, does NOT star Priyanka Chopra. Everyone, including her, keeps saying it's because she's happily married in the first one. So? Are married people not allowed in films? What is this injustice. So guess who they roped in to replace her? Katrina Kaif. I guess there's no such thing as overexposure for this one. Just kidding, that's something no Bwood star should believe in (except Amitabh Bachchan, OMG tone it down a notch already).

Okay so since we're on the topic of sequels... DON 2 is, in fact, going to be made. Same director, same hero, same heroine (I hope this is true, because I remember hearing she may not be in it), I hope Isha Koppikar-Narang. stars in the sequel too. They were supposed to start shooting in Berlin this coming April so the movie could be a Diwali release, but looks like they'll start shooting in September. Oi ve, that is too far off.

Yet another sequel which is technically a trilogy... KRRISH 2! There are only two things I can confirm for you, the rest are rumors. So here are the two facts: Papa Roshan will be directing the film and Hrithik will, obviously, be the star. Now for all the rumors. There have been murmurs that Deepika Padukone will star opposite of Hrithik. Now normally I wouldn't approve this. Replacing Priyanka? God forbid (and I am still a litte miffed), but maybe this movie will help Deepika. She's definitely at the same stage Priyanka was when she starred in Krrish, no? Rumor number two. I have read here and there that SRK may be playing the role of a villain. OMG... I love evil Shahrukh! It's so old school early '90s. Except, I'm kind of sad because Naseerudin Shah did a PHENOMENAL job in Krrish. Seriously, I felt like he didn't get enough credit for it.

And from one Hrithik starrer to another. It is reported that he will be starring in Zoya Akhtar's next... untitled venture along with Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol. I can't wait to hear more about this.

Looks like Hrithik saab is working over time these days because he is also set to star in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's all English film GUZAARISH with Aishwarya Rai. Aaah, all-English? Last time SLB had Aish speak in English we got this

Uhh... I remember thinking how that beautifully crafted movie was suddenly tainted by those few Angrezi lines. Okay, I'm being a snob. I'm sure it'll be done well. It's not like Hindi-cinema hasn't done all-English films before. [Oh also, I forgot to mention in my earlier post, but Delhi Belly is an all-English film too.] Rumor has it the leading two are to sing a song for the film. It's a pretty well known fact that Aish has a beautiful voice (Yes, hi, do you have any flaws?) it'll be interesting to hear Hrithik... assuming this is true.

Another Sanjay Leela Bhansali venture is CHENAB GANDHI. It is to be directed by Vibhu Puri, SLB's assistant director while the movie will produced by SLB himself. The film stars Rajeev Khandelwal, Amitabh Bachchan and Vidya Balan. What was that? Ah, yes that she's perfect for these rustic-period film roles. Chenab Gandhi is about the true story of a pashtun freedom fighter, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan. He shared many of the same ideas as Gandhi, such as promoting non-violence and he was also against the partition of India. John Abraham was to play the role (because he looks more the part) but failed the screen test. Sad. Rajeev is a talented guy, I think this movie will help unveil what a talented actor he is.

Alright, last two. Both are Farah Khan ventures. One stars SRK while the other stars Akshay Kumar. The Akki starrer is titled "TEES MAAR KHAAR." Katrina is to star opposite Akshay. What a cop out, Farah Khan. I would expect something original from you. That's about all I can find out about this movie oh and that it was, basically, blasphemous she didn't cast SRK instead. That's okay though because she has him casted in her other upcoming film HAPPY NEW YEAR (my God, that title makes me gag). It's set to start shooting in 2011. Lord, why do we know about it so far in advanced? I hope the title changes sometime in the next year.

OMG, that is all for now... there are two movies I haven't mentioned, but I'm too lazy. Dobi Ghat and Crooked. Watch out for more updates on those plus the films mentioned above. I will be surprised if you read this entire thing!!

Btw, on a non-Bolly and a more Hollywood note, The Hangover 2 is currently being scripted. What IS it with all these sequels?

This weekend we got the release of two new promos. Yippie ay oh ky yay! Sorry for the delay in putting them up but it was a busy Holiday-filled weekend.

First, we get a longer look at Shahid's dancing (drool) in a song title 'Pump It Up' from Chance pe Dance. Ughhhhh will this nasty English-titled song obsession die or is it only going to get worse?! Didn't something like this happen once in the '80s? I don't think it was this bad though. Bollywood Gods, do something please! Okay after ranting about how much I hate that, the song is actually alright... once the beat kicks in. I like techno-ish, but not when it's OD-ed which happens often in these 'club' (er disco?) numbers. I see nothing new aside from the fact that the guy can actually dance dance. Doesn't make me want to watch the movie any more, any less. Anyway, you decide:

Next up we have the first release of the Yash Raj Film, Pyaar Impossible
starring: Priyanka Chopra (yaaaay), Uday Chopra (I have hope) and Dino Morea (YUM). I swear I've seen a trailer somewhere, but now I can't seem to find it. Any how here is a song titled "Alisha." Typical Yash-Raj young-love looking film, which always catches my eye. Also, apply the English-in-songs rant from above to this song too:

Bollywood Books

Cine Blitz (the magazine) launched Cine Blitz Gold, a coffee table book commemorating 35 years of the magazine's existence. The cover is a picture of Amir Khan and Katrina Kaif paying homage to Guru Dutt & Waheeda Rehman in Pyaasa (but I'm confused, because that movie came out way more than 35 years ago? Details shmetails, I'll take it.) The book launch was titled "Love & Longing in Hindi Cinema." Interesting. I'm still trying to figure out what this book is about, but I think it just touches upon Bollywood and its history? It includes guest writers such as Javed Akhtar, Karan Johar, Amir Khan, Vikram Bhatt and the works. I WANT THIS BOOK. So, even though my birthday is no where near and Eid has gone by... my half birthday IS coming up. Wink wink, nudge nudge. Okay, fail. I'll order it myself.

After Mrs. Shetty-Kundra, Lady Isha Koppikar got married to long time boy toy Timmy Narang (Last time I heard someone named 'Timmy' was the kid off of Fairly Odd Parents). As I mentioned in an earlier post, one of her sangeets was Barbie and Ken themed and I guess she had another (which, fortunately, had no theme). Throughout her entire wedding, there were a lot of pink hues. The woman is stunning (and totally underrated. Here are some pictures from each event, enjoy!:

I don't have a promo for "My Name is Khan" but I had to share this news with you, 'cause I'm pretty excited about this and you should be too. The theatrical trailer for MNIK is going to be released globally with James Cameron's AVATAR on December 18th. Oh Em Jee. Let it sink it, let it sink in. I do remember hearing K-Jo say somewhere how he felt it was about time Bollywood was put on the global map and rightfully so. Exciting ish, no? I think so. Well, I just hope it's actually a good movie. I mean, KJO, SRK, Kajol... it's such a beautiful formula it's scary. Oh and Tanay Chheda (think Slumdog Millionaire, Taare Zameen Par, and Don) is in the film too. I guess this post should have fallen under 'Forthcoming' huh? Well anyway, I couldn't contain myself. Onto an actual promo...

Salman Khan's anticipated VEER. Alright, before I say anything, remember back when "Lucky - No Time for Love" came out and it starred Sneha Ullal better known as "that chick who looked exactly like Aishwarya Rai" and everyone said Salman Khan picked her 'cause she looked like his ex. Well, there have been murmurs that his heroine for Veer, Zarine Khan, looks very much like Ms. Kaif. Now that we've seen the promo, I hereby declare those rumors to be true. It's actually kind of sick and weird because he's still with Katrina... awk. In his defense, after the disaster that was Yuvraaj he vowed never to work with his lady-love again... although I'm sure the casting for Veer was done before the release of Yuvraaj. Just sayin'. ANYWAY check out the promo, the movie is set to release in January 22nd.

Here's what my thought process was like upon viewing this:
"Ooh period film, yes! Aggressive gory Salman Khan, gross. His fans will eat this up though. Oh wait, this looks kind of powerful and promising. Love story?? Beautiful music? Score. Katrinaaaa?! Oops. Meh."

Oh p.s. this has nothing to do with anything but I don't think it could be a post of its own. I was just on a website where they have actress' ratings every week and the top three are the usual Kareena, Katrina, Priyanka, etc. but today it was 1) Kareena Kapoor 2) KASHMIRA SHAH 3) Katrina Kaif. **EDIT** I messed up... Papa Shetty couldn't make it out to the sangeet but was supposed to have been cured by the wedding day. It was also on his behest the girls go ahead and leave for Khandala while he was sick (how very filmy). Also, the family performed a skit as well, how cutee. **END EDIT**

Of course everyone and their mom knows Shilpa Shetty got hitched this weekend, but as a Bollywood blogger I feel it is only my duty to share what I can about the wedding so here it goes:

SHILPA SHETTY'S SHAADI (who doesn't love a good alliteration?)

Lady Shetty got hitched this weekend to long time boyfriend/co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals, Raj Kundra and as a man in the precious stones business (win) he gifted her a 20-carat diamond ring. Oh and toss in a mansion in The UK on the side but that's just for fun since they're living in Mumbai. Anyway, the wedding was done in true Konkani-Manglorean fashion and all the events took place in the beautiful Khandala (I act like I've been there, but if it's a 'hillstation' it should be pretty, right?). Papa Shetty couldn't make it to the wedding because he was hospitalized due to malaria. That has GOT to suck. First her sister was unable to attend the engagemnet and now NO DADDY AT THE WEDDING?! Why oh why is she in such a hurry to get hitched? Is her baby bump gonna show soon? You didn't hear me say that. I didn't say it... but it is an assumption. In her defense, Momma Shetty is supposed to be a strict astrologer so perhaps this was actually the best 'mahurat.' Hopefully he will be better by Tuesday when the reception takes place in Mumbai. Anyway, the sangeet invites were extended to 150 of the 1000 invited for the reception and since you're wondering, some of Bwood's finest, naturally, were invited such as KJO, SRK, Salman Khan, Farah Khan, and Amitabh Bachchan & Co. [Not sure how many of them made it out, but I'm pretty sure Karan was busy with his cousin's wedding this weekend.] Shilpa and Raj danced to 'Teri Ore' how very Bollywood (which means I love it) and the family danced to 'Ahun Ahun' at the sangeet. Both of those songs have, at one point, been an obsession for me so good job Shetty family (because pleasing me was obviously their intention). Kickass choreographer Ganesh Hegde (who I secretly find attractive... don't get confused this isn't the mota Ganesh choreo.!)was the man behind it all. All of her clothes were designed by Mr. Tarun Tahiliani and his by Shantanu & Nikhil. The jewelry was taken care of by Anmol Jewellers. Here are some pictures from the sangeet and the wedding.

Even celebrities are blushing brides on their big day, I love it.

She is the epitome of The Indian Beauty. Is anyone else salivating over that peacock bajuband?! It is effin' beautiful.

Fun fact for the post: Raj has a three-year old daughter, Deleena from his previous marriage to Kavita (can't find her maiden name). I get a very media-whorey vibe from her so I'm going to choose to ignore all her "Shilpa broke my marriage" bs.

Oh P.S. Isha Koppikar had a sangeet this weekend too. It was Ken and Barbie themed. Um, still trying to digest that one. She's lucky Shilpa stole the spotlight because no one needs to know about a Ken and Barbie Sangeet. Btw, I really like Isha so I'm sad to write negative things about her.

Forthcoming Films

There's quite a few films lined up so I'll try to stick with those that are worth mentioning.

First, we have Rajneeti expected to release sometime in 2010. The film has quite a list of talented actors. We have Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgan, Ranbir Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi, Manoj Bajpai and Katrina Kaif. Whilst reading that list did that record halting noise (you know, the one that indicates a negative surprise) play in your head too when you came across Katrina's name? Get this, she plays Sonia Gandhi. Director, Prakash Jha is a talented man who only casts best of the best so maybe he sees potential or maybe he just likes the idea that he can actually cast a half-Indian half-Caucasian actress. I have faith. I want to like Katrina, which don't get me wrong, I don't hate the girl but she is definitely overrated. Maybe this will be her breakout role. Let's cross our fingers. Also, it's nice to see Ranbir (who plays an NRI) branching out and not sticking to one genre or one camp. I guess that's what happens when you're part of the Kapoor lineage (I think they're my favorite Bollywood family). Oh, fun fact for the post: Ranbir, Bebo and Lolo are the first generation in the Kapoor Khandaan to have all been successful. Woohoo, glad that happened in my lifetime.

Next up we have Delhi Belly. Produced by Amir Khan, directed by Abhinay Deol and starring Imran Khan, Kunaal Roy Kapoor, Vir Das, Poorna Jagannathan, Shenaz Treasurywala, Kim Bodnia, Vijay Raaz, Ravi Khaanwilkar, Monica Dogre. I'm going to shamelessly admit the only people I've heard of are Imran Khan (obvs), Vir Das and Shenaz Treasurywala. I'll research these other folks soon and get back to you. I don't know much about the movie except that the phrase "Delhi Belly" means you have an upset stomach... usually us NRI/foreigners get it. Gross. No idea if the film touches upon that metaphorically or what. It's also supposed to be a sex-comedy. We also know that Imran had to sport a jungli-disheveled look for the film. Have a looksies (be sure to look at his promotional shirt):
Lastly, Ranbir Kapoor and Chitrangada Singh were to have originally been casted. She opted out due to little acting scope but we're not sure about Ranbir. Maybe it was a 'dates issue', isn't it always?

There's Karthik Calling Karthik (which I'm pretty excited about) starring Farhan Akhtar, Deepika Padukone, Ram Kapoor and Shefali Chaya. What a lovely cast, I absolutely adore all four of them. It's directed by Vijay Lalwani and produced by Farhan A. and Ritesh Sidhwani and the music was composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The film is about a man who recieves a call from himself. It's supposed to be a psychological-thriller sprinkled with some humor and a bit of romance on the side. It's slated to release February 26th and since it's so far, much information isn't out. All I know is that Deepika plays an unconventional role and I'm excited to see that.

There are more upcoming films that should be mentioned but I'll save it for another post.

A couple of weeks ago we got a glimpse of Ranbir Kapoor's much awaited Rocket Singh-Salesman of the Year which is to be released on December 11th. The film is directed by Shimit Amin (of Chak De India fame), written by Jaideep Sahni, produced by Aditya Chopra and the music's by Salim-Suleiman. The movie stars Ranbir Kapoor (and people are claiming it's going to be his best role yet)Shazahn Padamsee, daughter of famed Alyque Padamasee (famous Indian-theater personality), Sharon Prabhakar, also a theater personality, a pop singer and co-star Shazahn's mummy-dearest and BEST OF ALL GAUHAR KHAN aka the love of my life. Gauhar is a model, sister of famous TV personality Nigaar Khan but probably most famous for being a contestant in Jhalak Dikhlaja (she placed second, though we all know she deserved first!).

Of course we can't have a hyped upcoming movie without a side dish of gossip so here's what's the latest for this film. Well, to be honest, whoever is doing the PR work isn't really generating anything interesting except that Shazahn and Gauhar are at loggerheads (did I use that properly?) over who plays the 'lead' actress. The film doesn't even call for a lead actress. Shazahn is opposite of Ranbir, but only shot for four days whereas Gauhar's role called for a four-month shoot. I hope somewhere in that shoot Gauhar got a badass dance number, though it's not likely.

Anyway, here is a theatrical trailer which released some time ago and a promo that released this past week. Enjoy!

The ending is so hilarious/cute.

I get a very "Jame Raho" from Taare Zameen Par feeling with the whole 'always on the run' angle.

Doesn 't Ranbir as a sardar ji look amazing? I'm a sucker for facial hair, maybe that's why.

Next we have Chance Pe Dance starring Shahid Kapoor and Genelia D'Souza, directed by Ken Ghosh (no wonder Shahid's in this film), produced by Ronnie Screwala, music by Adnan Sami, Sandeep Shirodkar and Ken Ghosh himself. It's expected to release on Jan. 15th. It's about the struggle to become a famous actor. Not in a 'Luck By Chance' sort of way but in a typical fun unrealistic Bollywood sort of way. I hope we get to see a lot of dancing Shahid and spared the horror of a dancing Genelia. Just check out the trailer (came out a few weeks ago so you may have already caught it):

Weekend Releases

...and by 'releases' I mean 'release.'

The much-hyped Kurbaan, released this weekend and as expected is doing well. Looks like the whole 'films-where-real-life-couples-play-a-reel-life-couple-never-do-well' theory falls flat with this film and thankfully so 'cause I'm really anxious to see it! I always fall for good publicity and pretty much take anything Karan Johar says with a handful of salt and if he produced this film, then by God, I will watch it (I know biases are bad, but I can't help it. I love the man.). Which, speaking of, it's nice to see that Dharma Productions is branching out from its Romantic forte (barring the disaster that was Kaal) and sprinkling it's magic on other genres. So all-in-all the movie is running succesfully and has repeatedly been stated that it's "the best Hindi film of 2009." (of course 3 idiots, Rocket Singh and Paa have yet to release) I sense film award nominations already. I wonder how Thackeray & Co. feel with the success of the movie or Dharma Productions in general.

Let me to shed a little bit of light on this Thackeray controversy (if you haven't already been enlightened):

#1) Before the release of 'Wake Up Sid' Raj Thackeray [nephew of Bal (leader of the Shiv Sena party)] made K-Jo come over and told him it wasn't cool that Karan used the word "Bombay" (instead of Mumbai) in the film and asked him to apologize. So Johar-saab threw in an apology at the beginning of Wake Up Sid and everyone was pissed that he caved, this includes the CM.

#2) About a week ago Bombay (yes, Bombay) woke up to find that Kareena had been covered in a sari in all of the Kurbaan Billboards. I wish I was lying. The Shiv Sena women felt 'nude' pictures (mind you, all you can see is her bare back) were too vulgar for the general public. I saw a picture of the draped sari, it was hilarious. [I can't remember where I saw it and now I'm going crazy searching for it] The ladies planned to gift her a sari at her home and when asked how she felt about the whole situation the ever so blunt Bebo just said she hoped it was a color she liked.

Anyway, can't say much about the film since I live in Oklahomie and won't get to see the movie until Nov. 29th (the perfect ending to my Thanksgiving-Eid-Bedlam weekend) so I'll get back to y'all then.

Paa starring Jr. B, Daddy B, Vidya Balan and Paresh Rawal, directed by R Balakrishnan (think 'Cheeni Kum') produced by Sunil Manchanda, music by Illayraja and lyrics by Swanand Kirkire.

Yeah, I'm wondering where the flaw in that cast & crew is too (granted I'm not a Big B fan, but the man can act).

Abhishek Bachchan plays the father of Auro (Amitabh Bachchan) who suffers from Progeria aka Hutchinson–Gilford syndrome (my BFF Wikipedia tells me it's "...an extremely rare, severe, genetic condition wherein symptoms resembling aspects of aging are manifested at an early age..."). I'm not going to go into more detail. Here's a trailer for the film:

I know, right? I can't believe that's Amitabh either! I seriously seriously commend Christian Kifle and Dominic (of LOTR fame) for their make up job. The scene at the end where Jr. B is carrying Daddy B is quickly becoming iconic. I also like the scene where Vidya Balan (whose character in the film is her namesake) and Amitabh are jumping in the puddles. She's so ideal for these 'rustic' films ie: Parineeta and Guru. Also, before everyone is quick to jump and say that this is inspired by Benjamin Button or Jack the director himself said " Let me tell you that Paa is neither. First, Jack is a bad movie and you don’t ever want to make a bad film. Secondly, if I really want to spend so much money on a bad movie, I’d rather buy its DVD. As for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button , the only similarity is in the look of the characters and that too only in the shape of their heads." he also goes on to say that there are "ten other films" on Progeria and his focuses on the relationship between a father and a son.

The movie is slated to release December 4 and the music release for November 15 (today). A big music release was planned for Children's Day (November 14) but music maestro Illayraja couldn't be torn away from his work. Man, I love that man. What kind of genius do you have to be in order to be A. R. Rehman's mentor? Seriously. So now the music is going to release without any hullabaloo. Fun fact for the post: It's been reported that Amitabh won't be attending any of the promo events, but his voice will be present in the form of 'Auro', his character. I find it kind of creepy? Maybe it'll set the mood up and make Auro more believable.

Old is Gold... Fo' Sho.

I'm an absolute lover of old school films. I'm a lover of old things in general, so to see history brought to 'life' on the big screen just warms my heart. To see the fashion, the dialogue (just re-spelled this word a good eight times and now it sounds so weird. Say it over and over 'dialogue' Ah!)just the way of life. It's also a joy to see how close they were or weren't to Western cinema/culture. According to me, beginning in the late '70s, all of the'80s (barring all the wonderful parallel films that released during this era) and the early '90s were all reallly off (that doesn't stop me from loving them).

Anyway, I got to thinking after watching the 'Zoobi Doobi' promo about how many films now have a song and dance number parodying old classic scenes/songs. Here's a list of them, which is your favorite??

As I posted these I found myself loving all of them, but I think 'Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte' is my favorite because each era is a direct tribute to an actress and the choreography just floored me (holla, I love Vaibhavi Merchant).

Here's a fun fact for the day. Did you realize that the chorus of 'Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte' alludes to all three Khans? Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke (Aamir's film) Phir Milenge (Salman's film) Chalte Chalte (SRK's film). Well done, Jaideep Sahni (lyricist), well done.

Promo numero uno- 'Zoobi Doobi' from 3 Idiots:

All the black and white scenes are supposed to be an homage to the lovely Raj-Nargis duo. They were the greatest. Seriously.

Btw, I am totally obsessed with the soundtrack of Kurbaan, especially "Shukran Allah." The theatrical trailer looks spectacular as does the promo for the aforementioned gaana. Also, according to Tarun Mansukhani (Dir. of Dostana)the film is "bloodyfrikkinamazinglyoutstandinglybrilliantlynervewreakinglygood" Ah, but we mustn't forget he is part of the elite K-Jo's Chamcha Club.

The trailer for the (too) long awaited Dulha Mil Gaya is finally here: Starring SRK (in what I believe is only a cameo), Sushmita Sen & Fardeen Khan. Hm... can't decide how I feel. Watch for yourself:

R.I.P Simple Kapadia

Simple Kapadia, best known as Dimple Kapadia's younger (a lot of places claim older? Oh, Wikipedia...) sister and National Award winner for Costume Design in big sister's 'Rudaali' passed away on November 10th after three years of battling cancer. Simple's first claim to fame was in the film, Anurodh, directed by Shakti Samanta (a favorite of mine, who also passed away this year) starring opposite her brother-in-law, Rajesh Khanna. Well... I'm sure you know how the Indian audience handled that one. She found success in costume designing and, as mentioned above, won a National Award for it.

A "prayer meeting" (a euphemism for funeral?) was recently held and our favorite stars were there to pay their respects. Which is really very kind, but I'm kind of surprised by some of the stars who came out... only because they don't really seem to have any link to the Kapadias of course who am I to decide. It must be a film-fraternity thing. Here's a list of some of the attendees: Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, Juhi Chawla, Malaika and Arbaz Khan, Gayatri Joshi, Shweta Bachchan, Suzanne and Hrithik Roshan and obviously Akshay, Twinkle, Rinke and Dimple.

Btw, Hrithik was on his phone at some point and I was eerily reminded of that scene from 'Page 3' and felt sad, unless this wasn't a funeral... I'm still confused.

Weekend Releases

Tum Mile starring Soha Ali Khan [yay] and Emraan Hashmi [nay] supposedly opened to full houses this weekend. What? How? I mean, the cast isn't considered all-star and the story wasn't anything too gripping. I seemed to miss the usual shameless promoting that goes on prior to the release, so why the full houses?

Anyhow, I try to refrain from reviews in fear that the movie will be spoiled for me, but judging from the 'vibe' I'm getting everywhere (by 'everywhere' I mean the worldwide web) it's not doing that well. Not only that, but Producer Saab, Mahesh Bhatt, had four consecutive tweets bashing 'film reviewers.' I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that he's mad at them 'cause of their reviews. Just puttin' two and two together here...

I don't even waaaant to talk about this. Seriously. But for the sake of thoroughness, I guess I will. Aao Wish Karein starring Aftab Shivdasani and Aamna Shariff. First and foremost everytime I read this title I can't help but sing it to the tune of "Aao Twist Karein" am I alone? Secondly, Aftab-Aamna duo didn't work the first time around (Aloo Chaat) why would it a second? Also, it falls under the "fantasy" genre wish is something India seriously needs to work on (barring Aladin) and the only way to do so is with a strong cast and crew which this movie lacks. Lastly, I am totally convinced this screenplay was inspired by Abhijeet's "Chalne Lagi Hai Hawaiyen" video which stars the one and only... Aamna Shariff. Was all this her doing? Kidding (kind of). Btw, let it be known that I'm a big supporter of stars who make the jump from small to big screen so let's cross our fingers and hope the Balaji-Baby gets out of this Aftab-rut.

Oh, 2012 released this weekend in India and is doing the best. Surprise.

Okay, since this is my first post I feel really awkward. Surprise.

Basically where I hope to go with this blog is to inform you of the happenings in Bollywood and beyond [that pretty much means Tellywood (TV) or Parallel/Art/Independent films that technically aren't classified under Bollywood] and to share my thoughts on it along with hearing yours.

Be a doll, comment on this post so if/when this becomes big and famous you can say you've followed me from the start!

Also, all suggestions on improving the site are more than welcome (but be nice, I'm HTML illiterate again but in due time, I'll hopefully learn the ropes). On that note...
